WEDGMOUNT GLACIER
this hike is neither really easy or majorly difficult as some descriptions would have you believe. granted it is very steep, ascending 3300ft in under 6km, but i was still stood at the lake in under 2 and a half hours from the trailhead, far from the 6-7 hours i had anticipated. i paced myself based on 6 hours each way, but it was nowhere near. i did pass a lot of people who i predict would’ve taken around 3 to 4 hours, i just prefer to blast through it in one hefty push and have more time to explore at the top. plus i was a sweating, exhausted, calf-burned mess once i got to the lake, whereas they were probably fairly relaxed and sans-sweat.
before this clearing there is a short flat-ish section of really nice furry forest and then you start to get glimpses of the huge waterfall to the right. after some more steep, forest bits the final section is a ridiculously steep boulder field. horrible to come down. good views though.
after that you’re pretty much there. i spent a good 5 hours wandering around, swimming in the lake, walking on the glacier, seeing avalanches and goats etc. before heading back down. it took me about an hour to descend using tried and tested fell running style.
that’s a goat.
that’s the underside of a glacier.
